Firstly, if you have a filter, then check there are no leaks in the connections or pipework. If this all seems OK, do you have a waterfall? If you do, turn the pump off for 24 hours and check if the pond is still losing water. If the water level still goes down in the pond then the leak is probably in the main pond liner. If the water level stays the same the leak is probably in the waterfall. Do not turn the pump off in hot/humid weather if you have fish.

Let the water level continue dropping until it stops going down. The damage will be at this level on the liner. Mark where the water level has dropped to, pump out a few more inches of water, then with your fingertips press all around that line. An area that feels very soft is usually where the hole is.

This is sometimes difficult to fix. It usually means the waterfall needs to be stripped out, re-lined and then rebuilt.

A UVC lamp only eliminates suspended green algae and in doing so allows another algae to grow – usually blanket weed.

In a natural pond, i.e. a heavily planted pond, the aquatic plants will out-compete the algae – preventing blanket weed growth. In a fish pond a product called “Blanket Answer” by Cloverleaf is the best on the market. It really does work.

You may have an overstocking problem. After a few years the fish put on a growth spurt and start to breed. Your filter system may not be able to cope. Time to either upgrade your filter or re-home some of your fish.

Yes, if it’s only a few inches then there is no need to put tap water conditioner in. Any more than that add dechlorinator.

Warm water holds less oxygen than cold. Make sure the pump is running day and night, do not over feed the fish or overstock the pond.
