Women With Waders on BBC Radio 4

In 2012 Women With Waders were chosen to appear on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour

In a special series, spanning 12 months, Woman’s Hour followed the fortunes of three women and their companies to find out what it takes to build a successful business in such difficult economic times.

Our Managing Director, Jo Pateman, was lucky enough to be chosen and teamed up with a mentor who gave the benefit of their own experience in business.

Jo’s mentor was Nikki King, OBE, who is CEO of Izuzu Trucks (UK) Ltd. They got on on so well during the making of the series that Nikki asked Women With Waders to refurbish her Koi pond.

Nikki’s pond had become too small for her ever growing Koi, the filter was not coping with the amount of fish waste being produced and both the pond and waterfall were in desperate need of an overhaul.

After placing the fish in aerated holding tanks we were able to empty out the water and found there were quite a few cobbles in the pond!

The old pond and waterfall were dismantled and the pond was re-shaped. Westmoreland stone was used around the edge and was also used in the construction of the waterfall.

A separate area was made within the pond for Water Lilys and Iris. This is to stop the Koi nibbling the shoots. A new filter system was also installed.

As you can see from the picture on the right, Nikki’s pond now looks fantastic.

“Despite major construction work they treated my garden with total respect and nothing was out of place when they left. The final result exceeded all my expectations and I was blown away; I just keep staring out of the window at the miracle they wrought in my garden”
– Nikki King OBE

Below are the various stages in the transformation of the pond. The final result is shown on the right. Click any photo to enlarge.
